According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey of Mexico (ENSANUT) 2018, 45% of Mexican adults reported fear of pain as one of the main reasons for avoiding going to the dentist.
The ENSANUT also revealed that 21% of Mexican adults experience anxiety due to lack of control during dental visits.

A study conducted by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in 2020 found that 30% of Mexican patients avoid going to the dentist due to previous negative experiences.

Going to the dentist can be a scary and anxiety-provoking experience for many people. However, it is important to recognize that oral health is fundamental to our overall well-being.

The main fears of the dentist

Fear of pain: One of the most common reasons for fear of the dentist is the fear of pain during procedures. It is understandable that the sound of instruments and needles can generate anxiety, but it is important to remember that advances in dentistry have made treatments increasingly less invasive and more comfortable.

Anxiety about control: Many people experience anxiety due to lack of control during dental visits. Feeling vulnerable in the dental chair can lead to fear and discomfort. However, it is essential to communicate any concerns to the dentist and his or her team, who will be willing to explain each step of the process and provide support to reduce anxiety.

Negative past experiences: Previous negative experiences in the dental office can leave a lasting impression. If you have had a bad experience in the past, it is important to find a caring and trustworthy dentist who can help you overcome your fears and provide you with a positive experience.

The main consequences of poor oral hygiene are as follows

Tooth decay: Lack of proper oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay. Cavities are small cavities in the teeth that develop due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque. If not treated in time, cavities can eventually affect the root of the tooth and require more invasive treatments, such as fillings or even root canals.

Gum disease: Bacterial plaque buildup and lack of proper oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. These diseases can cause inflammation, bleeding gums, bad breath and, in advanced cases, tooth loss.

General health problems: Oral health is closely related to our overall health. Untreated oral infections can spread to other parts of the body and contribute to the development of serious diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory diseases.

Impact on self-esteem: Poor oral health can significantly affect a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Problems such as missing teeth, bad breath or discolored teeth can make someone feel insecure when smiling or speaking in public, affecting their quality of life and social relationships.

Facing the fears associated with dental visits is fundamental to maintain good oral health and it is necessary to go to specialists who know how to listen and treat each of their patients.
